An alternative to converting the cellulose fibre to syngas is to use the fibre as a virgin feedstock for anaerobic digestion (can be mixed with sewage cake). This is a biological process that produces a gas principally composed of methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) otherwise known as biogas. These gases are produced from organic wastes such as livestock manure, sewage sludge and the cellulose fibre produced by the RCR STAG system. Gas can be stored and used as alternative green fuel for vehicles or renewable "green" electricity generation. Digestion rates of between 30% and 50% are achievable and the biomass complies with the EU standard for compost of PAS 100. |
